Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
